울산에 대형 산불이 발생하자 모든 이들의 관심은 신속한 화재 진압과 피해 최소화에 집중되어야 했습니다. 그러나 김두겸 울산시장의 한 마디가 전혀 다른 종류의 불을 지피고 말았습니다.

"투입되는 공무원은 한계가 있고 또 요즘은 여성 공무원들이 굉장히 많아서 이 악산에 투입하기가 그렇게 용이치가 않은데... 특히 또 우리 해병대에서도 병력을 500명을 보내 주셔서 우리 전문 군인들이 산불 정리하기에는 굉장히 용이할 것 같습니다."

 

이 발언은 마치 여성 공무원이 많아서 산불 진화에 어려움이 있다는 뉘앙스로 해석되면서 즉각적인 비판을 받았습니다. **"끄라는 산불은 안 끄고 젠더 갈등에 불을 지피고 있는 것 아니냐"**는 비난이 남녀 모두에게서 제기되었습니다.

특히 충격적인 것은 실제로 많은 여성 공무원들이 현장에서 불을 끄기 위해 노력하고 있었다는 점입니다. 그들의 헌신과 노고를 한 순간에 무시하는 듯한 발언이 공직자의 입에서 나왔다는 사실이 더 큰 실망을 안겼습니다.

국민의힘은 판결 직전과 직후 180도 달라진 태도를 보였습니다. 권성동 국민의힘 원내대표는 판결 전 **"이재명 대표는 항소심 판결을 승복하겠다는 대국민 약속을 하라"**고 요구했습니다. 그러나 무죄 판결이 나온 후에는 "이심 판결은 받아들이기 어렵다... 대법원에 가면 반드시 파기환송될 것이라고 확신하고 있습니다"라고 말을 바꿨습니다.

더 충격적인 발언도 있었습니다. 나경원 의원은 이재명 대표의 2심 판결을 앞두고 "내일 이재명의 사망 선고일이 될 것이라는 점에 대해서 저도 이견이 없습니다"라고 발언했습니다. 이에 민주당은 "도를 넘은 극단적인 언어"라고 비판했고, 나 의원은 이는 '정치적 사망'을 의미한 것이며 문해력 부족을 지적한 것이라고 반박했습니다.

The Storm Raised by Words: Gender Discrimination at a Fire Site and Political Controversy over Court Verdicts

We often hear the proverb, "A word can pay a debt of a thousand coins." However, conversely, a single word can also cause irreversible ripples. Two recent issues heating up Korean society demonstrate this 'power of words.' Although the Ulsan mayor's inappropriate remarks at a forest fire site and the extreme political reactions to Lee Jae-myung's second trial acquittal appear to be different matters, they both show how 'words' can create social waves.

Not Putting Out the Fire That Should Be Extinguished: Another Spark That Spread Through Sexist Remarks

When a large forest fire broke out in Ulsan, everyone's attention should have been focused on quickly suppressing the fire and minimizing damage. However, one statement by Ulsan Mayor Kim Dugeum ignited an entirely different kind of fire.

"There is a limit to the civil servants that can be deployed, and these days there are so many female civil servants that it's not so easy to deploy them to this rugged mountain... Especially since the Marine Corps has also sent 500 troops, our professional soldiers should be very efficient in handling the forest fire."

This statement was interpreted as suggesting that having many female civil servants made firefighting difficult, which immediately drew criticism. "Instead of putting out the fire that needs to be extinguished, aren't you igniting gender conflict?" was the criticism raised by both men and women.

What made this particularly shocking was that many female civil servants were actually working at the scene, striving to extinguish the fire. A comment that seemed to dismiss their dedication and hard work in an instant, coming from a public official, caused even greater disappointment.

Dissatisfaction also erupted among men. Voices grew louder asking, "Does this mean only men should be deployed to dangerous and difficult places?" and "If that's the case, why didn't they hire more civil servants from the beginning?"

This is not an isolated incident. Two years ago, during a forest fire in Daejeon, the city issued a notice stating, "Female employees on standby at the forest fire site should go home, and male employees should gather in the parking lot the next morning," which sparked controversy. Discriminatory perceptions based on gender continue to repeat themselves in disaster situations.

Ulsan City Hall later explained that "female civil servants were equally deployed, and we were not talking about gender discrimination," but the impact of the statement had already spread uncontrollably.

This Isn't Right: Court Verdicts and the Politics of Extreme Language

Meanwhile, another "war of words" was unfolding in the political arena. The reactions to Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung's acquittal in his second trial were nothing short of a "verbal roller coaster."

The People Power Party showed a 180-degree change in attitude before and after the verdict. Before the verdict, the party's floor leader Kwon Seong-dong demanded, "Lee Jae-myung should make a promise to the public that he will accept the appellate court's decision." However, after the not-guilty verdict was announced, he changed his tune: "It's difficult to accept this second trial verdict... I am confident that it will certainly be overturned when it goes to the Supreme Court."

There were even more shocking statements. Ahead of Lee Jae-myung's second trial verdict, Representative Na Kyung-won stated, "I also have no objection to the fact that tomorrow will be the day of Lee Jae-myung's death sentence." The Democratic Party criticized this as "extreme language that crosses the line," while Na countered that she meant "political death" and was pointing out a lack of reading comprehension.

Amid these extreme statements, physical threats against Lee Jae-myung are becoming a reality. The Democratic Party has revealed that there are terrorist plans, and Lee even wore a bulletproof vest when appearing in court.

Even more concerning is the case of former Jangsin University professor So Kicheon, who publicly posted a message wishing for President Yoon Suk Yeol to implement martial law and for an assassination plan against Lee Jae-myung to succeed. In response, a progressive Christian group reported Professor So to the police on charges of inciting rebellion and instigating murder.

The Weight of Words and Social Responsibility

These two incidents remind us once again that 'words' carry weight and influence beyond mere expression. The statements of people in public positions, in particular, have even greater ripple effects.

Mayor Kim Dugeum's remarks lowered the morale of many civil servants who were dedicated to the disaster situation and caused unnecessary social conflict. In an emergency, a leader's role should be to acknowledge the efforts of all members and foster unity.

The use of extreme language in the political arena can also shake the foundations of a democratic society. Likening an opponent to "death" or evaluating court decisions according to one's political convenience undermines trust in the judiciary and deepens political division.

Even more serious is the fact that such extreme language can lead to actual violence. The reality that public posts wishing for assassination have appeared serves as a warning sign of how far our society has come.

The Dignity of Language We Need

The two cases above show how desperately our society needs "dignity in language." Public officials and politicians should always be mindful of the ripple effects that their words can bring.

At disaster sites, there needs to be an attitude that recognizes and respects the hard work of all personnel, regardless of gender. Additionally, in the political realm, discourse should be formed based on personal respect for opponents and trust in the rule of law.

We all need to ask ourselves these questions: Whether my words might hurt someone or fuel social conflict, and whether my use of language contributes to elevating the dignity of our society.

It remains to be seen whether there will be additional explanations or apologies regarding Ulsan Mayor Kim Dugeum's remarks, and how Lee Jae-myung's legal proceedings will progress. However, what's more important is what lessons our society will learn from these incidents and how we will develop moving forward.
