본리리 야산 산불은 신속한 대응으로 26분 만에 진화에 성공했으나, 저녁 시간대에 발생한 함박산과 화원읍 산불은 야간 작업의 어려움과 바람 등의 기상 조건으로 인해 진화에 어려움을 겪고 있습니다.

"불길이 번지는 속도와 지형 등을 고려할 때 진화에 다소 시간이 걸릴 것으로 보인다."

화원읍 산불 현장의 소방 관계자는 이같이 밝혔습니다. 특히 화원읍 산불 발생 지역은 주거지와 인접해 있어, 추가 확산을 막기 위한 대응이 집중되고 있습니다. 함박산 산불 현장에서는 남쪽에서 초속 1.6m의 바람이 불고 있어 불길 확산의 변수로 작용하고 있습니다.

달성군은 오후 8시 51분, 긴급재난문자를 통해 "함박산(화원읍 및 옥포읍)에 산불이 발생했다"며 "인근 주민과 등산객들은 안전한 장소로 대피해 달라"고 알렸습니다. 다행히 현재까지 인명 피해에 대한 보고는 없으나, 주거지와 가까운 화원읍 산불에 대한 우려가 큽니다.

Flames Spread by Typhoon-Level Winds: The Battle Against Forest Fires in Dalseong County, Daegu

Three Forest Fires Erupting on the Same Day

Dalseong County in Daegu faced an emergency situation with three simultaneous forest fires breaking out on March 26. The first flames started around 3:30 PM on a hill in Bonri-ri, Hwawon-eup, followed by additional fires on Hambak Mountain and in Hwawon-eup during the evening hours.

Hwawon-eup (Near Songhae Village, Myeonggok-ri) Fire

While the Bonri-ri hill fire was successfully extinguished in just 26 minutes thanks to prompt response, the fires that broke out in the evening at Hambak Mountain and Hwawon-eup are proving more difficult to contain due to nighttime operation challenges and weather conditions including wind.

Firefighters' Desperate Battle

"Considering the speed at which the flames are spreading and the terrain, we expect it will take some time to extinguish the fire."

This was stated by a fire official at the Hwawon-eup fire site. The fire in Hwawon-eup is particularly concerning as it's close to residential areas, making containment efforts a priority. At the Hambak Mountain fire site, winds from the south at 1.6 meters per second are acting as a variable in the spread of flames.

At 8:51 PM, Dalseong County sent an emergency disaster text message stating, "A forest fire has broken out on Hambak Mountain (Hwawon-eup and Okpo-eup)" and urged "nearby residents and hikers to evacuate to safe locations." Fortunately, there have been no reports of casualties so far, but there is significant concern about the Hwawon-eup fire due to its proximity to residential areas.

The Culprit Behind Fire Spread: 'Typhoon-Level Winds'

Why aren't these fires being easily extinguished? 'Typhoon-level' strong winds and dry weather are being identified as the causes for the prolonged forest fires throughout the Yeongnam region.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, a strong wind advisory is issued when wind speeds are expected to reach 14 m/s or instantaneous wind speeds of 20 m/s or higher on land. However, on March 25, the Yeongnam region experienced winds far exceeding these thresholds:

• Andong: 19.7 m/s
• Cheongsong: 25.1 m/s
• Yeongyang: 16.5 m/s
• Yeongdeok: 25.4 m/s

These are comparable to typhoon-level winds, which can turn even small embers into large fires in an instant. Additionally, dry weather has turned fallen leaves and branches in forests into dry fuel, further accelerating the spread of forest fires.

These fires in Daegu occurred amid the spread of large-scale forest fires in North and South Gyeongsang Provinces. Daegu City is closely monitoring the situation in Hwawon-eup and considering additional support as needed.
