Massive Wildfire Spreads to Five Regions in Just Four Days
On March 21, 2025, a fire that started in Uiseong, North Gyeongsang Province, spread rapidly to surrounding areas with strong winds. Andong, Cheongsong, Yeongyang, Yeongdeok, and even Sancheong and Hadong in South Gyeongsang Province... In just four days, the wildfire spread to an extensive area.
Human Casualties: A Tragedy That Claimed 18 Precious Lives
The most heartbreaking loss from this wildfire is the human casualties. So far, a total of 18 precious lives have been lost due to the wildfire, with 3 deaths and 1 injury in Andong alone. Even more tragic is the fact that a helicopter crashed during firefighting operations, claiming the life of a veteran pilot with 40 years of experience.
Area 43 Times the Size of Yeouido Reduced to Ashes... Third Largest Forest Damage in History
The forest damage area is estimated to be 43 times the size of Yeouido in Uiseong alone. The fire-affected area in Andong is 37,000 hectares, equivalent to the size of about 51,000 soccer fields. Various facilities including houses, industrial complexes, post offices, and temples have been destroyed by the fire.
National Crisis Alert Raised to 'Severe'... Difficulties in Firefighting Operations
The Korea Forest Service has raised the national crisis alert for forest fires to the highest level, 'severe', and is mobilizing a government-wide response. The National Fire Agency has also raised the response level for the Uiseong fire to level 3. However, firefighting operations are facing difficulties due to strong winds and limited visibility at night, and there are also issues with the shortage of equipment such as super-large helicopters.
