28일 오전 5시 기준, 경북 지역 산불의 평균 진화율은 85%를 기록하고 있습니다. 특히 최초 발화 지점인 의성군은 무려 95%의 진화율을 보이며 곧 완전 진화를 앞두고 있습니다. 안동은 85%, 청송 89%, 영덕 65%, 영양 76%의 진화율을 나타내며 점차 안정을 찾아가는 모습입니다.

산불 진화의 가장 큰 장애물이었던 건조한 날씨와 강풍에 변화가 생겼습니다. 밤사이 산불 지역 곳곳에 소량의 비가 내렸고, 풍속도 초속 2~3m 수준으로 느려지면서 진화에 유리한 환경이 조성되었습니다. 특히 안동 지역에서는 우산이 필요할 정도의 비가 잠시 내려 진화 작업에 숨통을 틔워주었습니다.

그러나 이미 발생한 피해는 실로 엄청납니다. 인명 피해만 24명에 달하며, 산불 영향 구역은 무려 4만 5천여 헥타르(약 1억 3천만 평)에 이르러 역대 최대 피해를 기록할 가능성이 높습니다. 한 성묘객의 실화로 시작된 불씨가 이토록 큰 재앙으로 번질 줄은 아무도 예상하지 못했을 것입니다.

통신의 단절: 현대 문명의 취약성

산불이 가져온 또 다른 위기는 바로 통신망의 붕괴입니다. 28일 오전 7시 기준, 경북 의성·안동·영덕, 경남 산청 등 지역에 설치된 통신 3사의 기지국 2,879개소에서 화재와 정전 피해가 발생했습니다.

서울시의 지원

오세훈 서울시장은 예정되었던 일정을 취소하고 경북 안동을 직접 방문하여 피해 현황을 살피고 대책을 논의하기로 했습니다. 서울시는 산불 발생 직후 소방 및 구조 장비 230대, 소방관 656명을 현장에 파견하여 진화 작업을 지원하고 있으며,

Catastrophic Andong Wildfire: From War with Nature to Hopeful Raindrops

In just a few days, the northern Gyeongbuk region has been engulfed in massive flames. This wildfire, especially centered around Andong, may be recorded as the worst wildfire disaster in Korean history. Let's examine how this situation unfolded and what efforts are currently being made.

Current Status of Gyeongbuk Wildfire: A Glimmer of Hope

As of 5 AM on the 28th, the average containment rate of wildfires in the Gyeongbuk region stands at 85%. Particularly, Uiseong County, where the fire first started, shows a remarkable 95% containment rate and is expected to be completely extinguished soon. Andong (85%), Cheongsong (89%), Yeongdeok (65%), and Yeongyang (76%) are all gradually stabilizing.

Nature's Small Gift: Rain

The dry weather and strong winds that were the biggest obstacles to firefighting have changed. Overnight, small amounts of rain fell in various wildfire areas, and wind speeds slowed to 2-3m/s, creating favorable conditions for extinguishing the fires. In Andong, it rained enough to require umbrellas temporarily, giving firefighters a much-needed respite.

Record-Breaking Damage

However, the damage already caused is truly enormous. With 24 casualties and affected areas reaching approximately 45,000 hectares (about 130 million square meters), this is likely to be recorded as the largest wildfire damage in history. No one could have predicted that a fire started by a single grave visitor would escalate into such a disaster.

Communication Breakdown: The Vulnerability of Modern Civilization

Another crisis brought by the wildfire is the collapse of telecommunications networks. As of 7 AM on the 28th, 2,879 base stations of three telecommunications companies in areas including Uiseong, Andong, Yeongdeok in Gyeongbuk, and Sancheong in Gyeongnam have suffered fire and power outage damage.

Unprecedented Communication Disruption

There have been 19,972 cases of general and internet phone and internet service disruptions, and 19,249 cases of paid broadcasting service disruptions. This goes beyond mere inconvenience, posing a direct threat to communication and safety in emergency situations.

All-Out Recovery Efforts

Telecommunications providers are doing everything possible by deploying mobile base stations, temporary base stations, power generation vehicles, portable generators, and dispatching on-site recovery personnel. Currently, they have achieved an 82.6% recovery rate for wireless base stations, 94.0% for telephone and internet lines, and 92.7% for paid broadcasting services, rapidly moving toward normalization.

Seoul City's Support

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon canceled his scheduled appointments to visit Andong in Gyeongbuk to assess the damage and discuss countermeasures. Seoul City has dispatched 230 firefighting and rescue equipment units, 656 firefighters to the scene, and provided 30,715 relief supplies.

All-Out War Against the Fire

Forest authorities are mobilizing helicopters, equipment, and personnel to their maximum capacity in an all-out effort to completely extinguish the fires. They are planning efficient firefighting operations by relocating helicopters from Uiseong to other areas once the fires there are fully contained.
