The Full Story: Unexpected Derailment of a New Train

At around 7:50 AM on March 23, 2025, an unexpected accident occurred at platform 4 of Sindorim Station on Seoul Metro Line 2. A newly released train violated a stop signal and derailed at the end of the track.

Initially, Seoul Transportation Corporation announced that the train had collided with a barrier on the track and derailed, but later corrected that it had violated a stop signal and derailed after passing the end of the track. Currently, the corporation has stated that they are "investigating various possibilities regarding the exact circumstances of the accident, including human error, facility issues, and system failures."

The fortunate aspect of this incident was that there were no passengers on the train at the time of the accident. With only the train operator and conductor on board, there were no casualties. However, the accident caused significant disruption to Seoul's transportation network.

Additionally, temporary boarding platforms were set up in front of 12 major subway stations on Line 2 to minimize inconvenience.

Despite these efforts, confusion caused by the sudden service suspension was unavoidable. In particular, many citizens were confused about how to reach their destinations due to insufficient information about alternative transportation options.

Accident Investigation and Operator Suspension

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promptly dispatched officials from the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board and the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to the scene to support accident recovery and begin an investigation. The ministry explained, "We are investigating whether there were any issues with the safety management system, including violations of operator compliance requirements and the appropriateness of accident response," adding that "if problems are found, we will conduct special inspections."

Meanwhile, train operator "A," who was driving the accident train, was suspended from duty pending investigation. A Seoul Transportation Corporation official explained, "We suspended A to investigate the cause of the accident."
